Fri 7 Apr, 8pm – SOLD OUT

Sat 8 April, 8pm – book free tickets here

Emptyset (artists Paul Purgas and James Ginzburg) present an ambitious new commission at the intersection between architecture, sound and performance.

Responding to the space of the DRAF studio, the event will present an entirely acoustic performance, incorporating constructed architectural elements and industrially manufactured materials, and using compositional aspects of micro-tonality, percussion and voice.

The performance is centred on two large-scale instruments realised over the course of three weeks in the space and developed from acoustic surveys of the building. The two-part programme will include new compositions by the duo accompanied by a vocal quartet.

The commission represents the fifth performance residency in DRAF Studio, a dedicated space for live works unique in London opened in 2015. It follows projects by Edward Thomasson, Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings, Augustas Serapinas and Jacopo Miliani, who have employed theatre, dance, sculptural installation and music into their performative responses to the space.

This project is curated and produced at DRAF by Sandra Pusterhofer, with technical support from Alex Roberts.

Thanks to Georgia Rodgers and Max Fordham LLP for in kind advice.

DRAF Studio is supported by Arts Council England and DRAF Galleries Circle.

Emptyset is a London/Berlin based production project formed in 2005 by James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas. The project examines the material properties of sound and its correspondence with architecture, performance and physical modes of production.

Emptyset released the album Borders in 2017 under the Chicago-based record label Thrill Jockey. Their past recorded output includes the releases Recur and Collapsed for the German record label raster-noton (run by Carsten Nicolai), Signal a commissioned performance working with ionospheric propagation and Medium an expanded live recording in Woodchester Mansion in Gloucestershire.

Emptyset have produced installations for Spike Island, Tate Britain and the Architecture Foundation and presented live performances with CTM/Transmediale, Kunsthalle Zurich and Sonic Acts XIV.
